Tokyo. Emperor Akihito of Japan will step down as the emperor on April 30, 2019, after almost 30 years of rule. Government and Imperial House Agency announced this on Friday.The 10-member committee, including Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and members of the royal family, announced this in a closed room meeting. Akihito's successor will take charge of his eldest son, Crown Prince Naruheito, on May 1, 2019. Earlier, Emperor Kokaku left the throne in 1817. Generally, the emperor of Japan is not allowed to step down under the legal framework of the country.
